If you are anything like me, there are times when you would rather decline all those invitations to dinners, movies, parties etc., to stay at home and write, read or maybe even blog. Anyhow, whenever you need a few excuses to explain your um, lack of presence at any event you now have a list of basic excuses to refer to as well as a few variations too so you aren’t constantly repeating yourself. Soon enough, you may find yourself repeating some of these excuses over and over again.
Practice these lies—I mean, excuses—enough times and you can lie—sorry, excuse yourself—from any event, party, movie, gathering, invite, and anything else you’ll ever need to get out of.
Say them with conviction and make yourself proud.
- I’m not feeling well.
- I’m really sick.
- I have a headache.
- I have a fever/cold/insert some life-threatening disease.
- I have an appointment.
- I have to see my eye doctor.
- I have my annual check-up on that day.
- I’m going to see my therapist.
- I am busy.
- I have work to do.
- I’m booked at that time.
- I have other *cough* obligations to attend to.
Or you can simply say straight to their face (or not):
My other priorities are more important than you.
A gentler way of putting it:
My other priorities are more important than this meeting/gathering/get-together. Maybe next time.
Whichever excuse(s) you decide to use, don’t feel guilty for being a bad friend/parent. You’re putting yourself first. Which is no easy feat.
Good for you for making time to write.
