A Descending Ascension

“It’s not worth it anymore,” she mumbled.

“So that’s it? After everything—”

“Stop Jake.”

He gripped the railing. “Riley, I’m not blaming you or trying to point fingers.”

A long silence descended upon them.

“I don’t know.” Her voice was quiet.

Jake stood, unmoving. “Okay.”

Riley went down the steps and turned the corner without saying another word.
