Why I Don’t Outline

If you didn’t know, I don’t outline. If you did know and you were wondering why, I’m about to tell you (in very few words because that’s my style).

  • I don’t know how to.
  • It’s fun not to.
  • I like surprises.
  • I’d rather be writing.
  • I never follow outlines.

  1. I don’t outline either (and I do know how down to the a). b). etc.) but I do list or divide my paper in half longways and put pros on one side of the crease and cons on the other or make some kind of skeleton “list” on paper that I can flesh out. That way I don’t forget the theme, thread, thesis or plot when I start actually writing sentences. Otherwise, I just go off “hunting rabbits”, and my essay or piece sounds like I’m sitting down to chat over a cup of coffee–not college worthy writing! Some structure is essential, and getting it down at the beginning insures I won’t forget anything I want to include: points, details, great sounding phrases that pop into my head…you get the picture.

    1. I hear where you’re coming from. Thanks for sharing your experience and perspective. Hmm I find that with academic writing, I like to be more organized. For the most part I attempt to outline. But when it comes to anything creative, I forge ahead without a concrete conclusion in mind. Ah yes. I do enjoy hunting down some rabbits and chatting however. Haha. It’s easy to forget when you don’t write things down.

  2. I love the outlining… It’s just the actual writing stage that’s the problem 😜😜 Where my confidence just goes downhill, and so does the daily progression of my word count.
