Muse of Nightmares – Laini Taylor | A Book Review

Muse of Nightmares - Laini TaylorTitle: Muse of Nightmares

Author: Laini Taylor

Genre: Fantasy

About the book: It’s the second novel in a series.

I received a free copy of the book from Hachette in exchange for an honest review.

First impressions: I was excited to read it.

Can we talk about the cover? It’s gorgeous.

I hadn’t read Strange the Dreamer, which is the first book in the series, so I had no idea what to expect. But I enjoyed the beginning a lot. The romance caught me a little bit off guard though.

Characters: Sarai is a ghost and Laslo is a god.

The characters grew on me. I liked getting to know everyone better, especially as Taylor revealed more of their backstory. They are complicated and nuanced.

Even though Minya has a messy past, I could relate to her. She also seemed to develop even more than Sarai.

I’m so here for the diversity, specifically the different sexual orientations. I think it was done well.

“We might be at odds, hate each other, and desire each other’s destruction, but in our despair, we are lost in the same darkness, breathing the same air as we choke on our grief.”

Writing: While I’m not a big fan of the romantic scenes, I did love the platonic relationships between certain characters. I loved the banter between friends.

The chapters aren’t too long or too short, and the plot moves at a good pace. There are some dark moments, but also light, funny ones.

Final thoughts: The ending is great. I’m happy with what happens.

I’d recommend reading Strange the Dreamer first. I didn’t, so I was a little lost at first, but everything eventually made a lot more sense.

If you’re into fantasy, check out Muse of Nightmares. It blends many elements together for a fun, fascinating read.

Feel free to add me as a friend on Goodreads to keep up with what I’m reading.
