Some days when all hope is lost, I turn to writing. Today is one of those days.
One of my all-time favourite songs in the world: Welcome to My Life by Simple Plan.
Here’s the chorus:
To be hurt
To feel lost
To be left out in the dark
To be kicked when you’re down
To feel like you’ve been pushed around
To be on the edge of breaking down
And no one’s there to save you
No, you don’t know what it’s like
Welcome to my life
I have listened to this song frequently throughout my life through the ups and downs, the highs and lows, the peaks and valleys, the good and bad. I can relate to this song like no other song out there. The song makes me realize I’m not the only one out there. That I am not alone.
Simply hearing the song makes me cry sometimes. The lyrics speak to me. I can relate to every line in the song. No kidding.
Songs remind us of who we are, of a specific person, of an event in our life that we will never forget. Music is powerful, influential.
As I sit here and write this post, I am listening to this song on repeat. I am at a lost for words because I get so caught up in the story told by this song in less than four minutes.
I can count on music even though I cannot count on anyone else. I turn to music when I have nowhere else to turn to. I trust that things happen for a reason and no matter how terrible they may seem, that I will grow stronger from the experience. That someday, I will be okay. Even if it is not today. One day I’ll be happy with myself, accepting of my flaws, and proud of who I am.
I am grateful for bands like Simple Plan for producing songs that tell a story and for giving me hope among many other reasons. Thank you Simple Plan.
I can honestly say this song saved my life.
